Choosing the right exam

How to pick between NAPLEX, MPJE, UMPJE, and CPJE preparation based on your state board's current requirements.

Last updated July 30, 2026

Your state board of pharmacy decides which exams you need, and the answer depends on your jurisdiction and whether you're a new graduate or transferring a license. Most candidates need NAPLEX plus a law exam, and the law exam varies by state.

  • NAPLEX is the national clinical exam nearly every US candidate takes.
  • MPJE is the state-specific law exam most jurisdictions use. StudyHaul offers separate preparation for each supported state.
  • UMPJE is NABP's uniform law exam that a growing set of jurisdictions is adopting in place of their MPJE. Check whether your state has transitioned and when.
  • CPJE is California's own law exam, used instead of an MPJE.

In the app, the exam catalog groups exams by profession and jurisdiction so you register for the path that matches your board. Confirm requirements with your board's current rules before registering, since boards control eligibility and StudyHaul is not affiliated with NABP, state boards, or exam administrators.
