First, the name

UMPJE means Uniform MPJE. It is NABP's 120-question, 2.5-hour adaptive law exam for participating jurisdictions. Passing can support licensure in an adopting state, but it does not replace that board's application, eligibility, fees, or other requirements.

What is the Uniform MPJE format?

The Uniform MPJE has 120 selected-response questions, 2.5 hours of testing time, adaptive delivery, and pass-or-fail reporting. You cannot return to an earlier question. NABP allows five UMPJE attempts total—not five attempts in each participating state. [MPJE and UMPJE test-day information]

Eligibility still comes from a board. Apply for the correct licensure path, wait for approval, purchase the exam, receive the ATT, and schedule under the current bulletin. Uniform content does not make board procedures uniform. [Uniform MPJE] [NAPLEX/MPJE Candidate Application Bulletin]

How does UMPJE differ from a state-specific MPJE?

A traditional MPJE combines federal law with one jurisdiction's law. The Uniform MPJE tests a shared jurisprudence framework accepted by participating boards. Those boards still decide who is eligible and may retain state applications, fees, background checks, education, training, or other requirements. [Uniform MPJE]

What does the Uniform MPJE cover?

NABP's four-domain outline covers Legal and Regulatory Principles, Licensure and Personnel, Professional Practice, and Pharmacy Operations. The exam expects application: deciding what a pharmacist, technician, intern, prescriber, facility, or board may or must do in a concrete situation. [Uniform MPJE content outline]

Study the uniform principles through scenarios, then keep a separate checklist for state requirements that live outside the exam. Passing a shared law test does not mean two boards issue licenses under identical rules. [Uniform MPJE] [Uniform MPJE content outline]

Which states use the UMPJE?

NABP's live table listed 12 participating states when we verified it on July 23, 2026. Some boards keep their old MPJE available during an overlap period, which is why the UMPJE start and MPJE retirement dates are not always consecutive. Use the exam that applies to your board, application type, and intended date. [UMPJE participating states]

How does UMPJE score transfer work?

For a participating board that accepts transfer, NABP allows a candidate to purchase score transfer during registration or up to 89 days after the exam. If you apply through NABP's electronic License Transfer Program, the UMPJE result is included in that process, so you do not separately buy score transfer for the eLTP application. [NABP UMPJE score-transfer guidance] [UMPJE participating states]

A transferred result is not a pharmacist license. It does not waive the receiving board's application, eligibility review, fees, background check, or any state-specific step. Confirm that the board accepts transfer for your application before relying on the 89-day window. [Uniform MPJE] [UMPJE participating states]

What if your state is in an overlap window?

Suppose your state starts UMPJE in April but retires its MPJE the following March. A candidate already approved for the MPJE may have a different path from someone applying after the UMPJE launch. Do not choose based only on which exam sounds broader; use the board and NABP instructions tied to your eligibility and date. [UMPJE participating states]

For a shorter overlap, timing can matter even more. If your ATT or test appointment crosses a retirement date, contact NABP or the board before rescheduling. A study course cannot extend an authorization or decide which score the board will accept. [UMPJE participating states] [NAPLEX/MPJE Candidate Application Bulletin]

What is the Pre-UMPJE?

The Pre-UMPJE is NABP's official practice option. It contains 40 questions, allows 50 minutes, and reports a score immediately. You may take it once per year and have seven days to begin after purchase. Use it as a checkpoint, then return to the official outline and the reasoning patterns behind your weak areas. [Pre-MPJE and Pre-UMPJE]

How should you study for the UMPJE?

Build practice around decisions: prescription validity, controlled substances, personnel authority, recordkeeping, facility operations, pharmacist responsibility, and board powers. For every rule, write the default, the exception, the required documentation, and a short scenario that forces you to choose an action.

Keep the exam and the license application in separate checklists. One tracks the four-domain outline and practice performance. The other tracks board forms, deadlines, fees, and state-specific requirements. Mixing them creates false confidence: knowing the law does not mean the application is complete.

How StudyHaul fits

Turn exam requirements into focused practice

StudyHaul uses the same jurisdiction table shown here to keep exam guidance aligned with the public guide. Practice focuses on applied rules and the mistakes you repeat. You should still verify every live licensing requirement with NABP and the board.
